Starting with the annual raising of the Poppy Flag at Duncan City Hall on Sunday, Oct. 29, the Royal Canadian Legion kicked off a period of awareness of the coming of Remembrance Day in the Cowichan Valley.
Later, the cadets and their supervisors and parents headed out to Mounainview Cemetery to place crosses on the graves of Valley veterans buried there.
This is part of significant and increasingly successful efforts across the Cowichan Valley to bring Remembrance Day and its history into the 21st century and make it part of people’s lives today.
Crosses will be or have been placed at Westholme, several churchyards in Duncan, and cemeteries in Cobble Hill, Cowichan Station, Shawnigan Lake, and Mill Bay by the time every event has been held.
