If you’re a film buff Cowichan Valley Hospice Society has brought back the fundraiser for you.

Starting on Sept. 26 with a showing of film Peace by Chocolate, Reel Alternatives, the monthly Hospice fundraiser is back at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre through January.

Peace by Chocolate is a Canadian film in both English and Arabic about an immigrant family who moves to Nova Scotia.

“It deals with struggles to reconcile family past with hopes and aspirations, between duty and desire,” says a press release. “An assortment of laughs and lessons about sacrifices.”

Next up, on Oct. 24 is Run Woman Run.

This is a Canadian Indigenous award winning film about a woman who is forced to change her lifestyle after developing diabetes. She is then visited by the spirit of Indigenous running legend Tom Longboat.

Funny, and touching and captures grief, family and triumph,” a press release says of the film.

On Nov. 28 Phantom of the Open hits the big screen.

No, this one’s not about opera. This is the true story of a U.K. man who follows his dreams and makes it to the Open in 1976.

“Star performances in a story about eternal optimism and unflinching family support,” the release says.

On Dec. 19 we head back to Canada with Halleluja (Leonard Cohen).

As you would expect from the title, this film looks at the life of the great Leonard Cohen in what a press release calls “a deep exploration of his artistry. It bears witness to a man grappling with his faith and love.”

Finally, on Jan. 30, it’s a screening of Ali and Ava.

This is a story about a working class romance in the U.K., described as “drama, romance and comedy.”

The press release says the film blends “emotional complexity with, at times a bracing depiction of trauma and grief.”
