Workshops take you inside film industry

Two professional level workshops are part of this year's Cowichan Aboriginal Festival of Film & Art.

Co-sponsored by Economic Development Cowichan and Film Cowichan, these sessions start Tuesday, April 22 with State of the Film Industry in BC and Locally.

Presented by Gordon Hardwick from Creative BC (formerly BC Film Commission) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Island Savings Centre boardroom, this first workshop talks about how the film and media arts industry in B.C. is starting to heat up again.

"This is your chance to network with industry contacts, find out about production services, tax credits and what is new in the film, animation and media arts industry, both in B.C. and locally. This workshop is a must for film makers, writers, industry workers and those interested in finding out more about the opportunities that the film and media arts industry can bring to the region," urged Economic Development's Geoff Millar, in describing the series of sessions.

Register online or by phoning 250-746-7930.

There's also a session on how to pitch your animation scheduled for Friday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Island Savings Centre Green Room.

There's only room for 18 people so investigate today if you are interested.

The idea behind it all is: does your art tell a story? Animation starts with a creative concept that evolves into a story, through use of visuals and script.

This pitching workshop is for artists, artisans, and writers looking to expand their creative talents into the world of animation.

Register for an opportunity to present your art and your creative concept to Luke Carroll, a producer of animation content for film and television.

Presentation times will be 20 minutes each. Register online at aff.cowichan.net or by phone at 250-746-7930. You will be contacted with your presentation time.

Selected artists will continue to work with Luke Carroll and Film Cowichan over the year to develop their concept and characters into animated products. When ready these projects will be taken to North American broadcasters for production funding.
