‘Sundown: The Gordon Lightfoot Experience’ comes to the Duncan Showroom

Nanaimo based musicians started their Gordon Lightfoot tribute just months before his passing

Fans of the late, great Gordon Lightfoot will be over the moon to hear that Sundown: A Gordon Lightfoot Experience will be gracing the Duncan Showroom stage on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Months before the Canadian music legend died on May 1 of this year, Nanaimo residents and musicians Bob Wilson, Andrew McMillan, and Trevor Price set out on the ‘carefree highway’ with the drive to perfect a Gordon Lightfoot tribute show, and managed to stay loose for their first show in Nanaimo on April 15.

“We were all heart broken by the news of Mr. Lightfoot’s passing, but we are happy to have prepared a fit tribute to his musical and cultural legacy,” said Sundown singer/songwriter Trevor Price. “Since then, we have had four more very successful shows in Nanaimo, Duncan, Parksville, and Port Alberni, and are excited to be playing Duncan again this fall, as well as Port McNeill and Victoria in the spring of ’24. We play a selection of Lightfoot’s music from the late ’60s to his last album in 2020, concentrating primarily on the first 10 years of his career.”

Price, who grew up on Lightfoot’s music, had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Lightfoot live in Nanaimo in November, 2022.

“After seeing him perform, I began actively pursuing the idea of a Lightfoot tribute,” said Price. “I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had accomplished musically in his career, but also struck by how important he was to me, personally. Believing this to be true for many people, I felt that this was a worthwhile musical project. I hope to bring Mr. Lightfoot’s music to those who were there when it was released, but I also hope to give younger audiences an appreciation of the beauty he created in his musical career.”

Price got some practice playing some of Lightfoot’s material at the Parksville beach gazebo this summer. Rounding off this talented tribute trio is guitarist Bob Wilson who has several years of classical and jazz guitar studies under his strap, and Andrew MacMillan who has brought his bass playing bravado to a number of bands over the years.

“I’m always surprised by how many people of all ages really enjoy his music,” said Price. “So, we’re all very excited to bring our show back to Duncan.”

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door, through https://showroomproductions.ca/buy-tickets, or by texting organizer Longevity John Falkner at 250-597-1554.

“Who isn’t a fan of Gordon Lightfoot’s music?” said Falkner. “It’s two hours of a wonderful tribute to his amazing repertoire, and a chance for all who attend to walk down their own memory lanes.”
