I’m George Nielsen and I am running for a seat on Duncan city council.
I first moved to Duncan in 1990 to work as the accounting manager for Country Grocer. Since then, I have worked in managerial positions at Island Savings and Thrifty Foods, utilizing my skills as a Certified Management Accountant (now CPA). Currently, I am the controller for the Beverly Corners Shopping Centre and have also been working as a realtor with RE/MAX. I believe my background in finance, management, and real estate would be an asset in providing a common sense reasonable leadership style to help run the affairs of the city.
This year I am honoured to have been elected the president of the Duncan Kinsmen, a group that helps with many worthwhile projects in the community. As an aside, we are always looking to welcome new members.
Like others, I am concerned with the increase of homelessness and drugs within the Valley. People having to live outside in the dead of winter also troubles me. I believe that we need to have compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. After all, no seven-year-old ever said to their mother, “I want to be a drug addict when I grow up.” We need to have the force of will to come up with some workable solutions and actually action them. Less studies and more doing.
I believe council should consist of people with a variety of skills and abilities and that council should work as a true team with all members working in the same direction. You have six votes to cast for councillor. Please consider me for one of your votes. I will work hard, listen to your concerns, and then make some tough decisions with the rest of the elected team.
When I was a nerdy six-year-old in 1972, I was entranced by Dave Barrett’s fiery speeches and I have been an NDP member for the past 25 years. However, although my beliefs lean left, my friends cross all ideologies and I believe we can all work together on problems that affect all of Duncan.
