Duncan Street Auto has opened at 5843 Duncan St.

Owned by business partners Marcel Viviers and Raman Deol, the shop offers a variety of services, including auto, boat, RV and motorcycle repair, wheel balancing, used-tire sales and detailing.

Deol said both he and Viviers have extensive backgrounds as mechanics and decided it was time that they began their own shop.

He said they can fix anything with an engine.

“We really like working for ourselves and we’re both from the Valley, so a lot of people know we started our auto shop here through word of mouth,” he said.

“Business has been good so far, so we’re happy with the response we’ve been getting.”

New owners for Shipyard

The Cowichan Bay Shipyard has new owners.

Rick and Debra Carpentier, owners of Cowichan Bay Classic Marine Ltd., have leased the shipyard from the current owners and have revived it as a fully working shipyard.

The couple also intend to add their marine-supply business and other services to the site.

Rick said the shipyard is looking forward to serving not only the local community, but the entire boating community in the Pacific Northwest.

New garden supply shop

Growing business opportunities in the garden-supply industry have led to a decision by Mike Atkinson to open his own business in Chemainus.

Atkinson opened Mid Island Garden Supply at 8377 Chemainus Rd. earlier this month.

He said he worked in the industry for many years, and with the growing popularity of medicinal plants and aquaponics, which combines fish and plant growing, Atkinson saw that the future was bright for the industry.

“We provide supplies for both indoor and outdoor gardening, so we’re going to be busy all year,” he said.

“I figured it was a good time to move on and do my own thing.”
