Studio One owner Jenny Jonas arrived at her hair salon last Tuesday morning to find her glass front door smashed to smithereens.
"The salon's been here for 15 years, I've had it for five years and it's never been broken into," Jonas said. "This is the first time.
"They targeted our product, our hot tools like curling irons, flat irons, that sort of thing that they can sell, I'm presuming, easy on the street," she said.
Cash was also taken.
It turns out the salon wasn't the only place hit that night.
A vehicle around the corner was also targeted.
"I've felt like it was pretty safe down here, not too much happens, but then when something like this happens you realize it's not that safe," she said.
The RCMP have been to the shop to investigate but Jonas isn't holding out much hope the perpetrators will be caught.
"I think they realize it's pretty hard to catch these people. It's likely that these people are off the Island by the time we found that we were broken into. You just don't know. It's one of those random smash and grabs for cash," she said.
The bright side is once the glass was cleaned up and the door's window replaced, stylists could get back to work.
"At least they didn't vandalize the place and we can keep working," she said. "That would have been more devastating to have had vandalism. I think they were just really after things they could sell on the street."
Jonas hopes other business owners will rethink their own security measures so they, too, don't become victims of theft.
"We'll move forward," she said. "We'll just be a bit smarter about things now. That's all that you can do."
