This who drink and drive, or drive stoned, should beware.
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, along with South Island Traffic Services, will be participating in a province-wide “Light up the Highway” campaign this weekend, June 28-30.
The initiative is part of an elaborate, province-wide, enforcement campaign that is geared towards education and prevention of impaired driving.
Officers will be out doing enforcement in highly-visible, high traffic areas looking for impaired drivers.
Officers will not only be out this weekend, but they’ll also be out unexpectedly and frequently all summer long to try and proactively prevent anyone who may be considering driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“Plan ahead, call a sober friend, call a taxi, use transit. We want people to get in the habit of planning a safe ride home ahead of time,” said Inspector Chris Bear, head of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment.
With the summer months now here, there are bound to be more summer barbecues, parties and events to attend in the Cowichan Valley.
Each year in B.C., 68 people die in crashes that involve impaired driving, with about half of those deaths occurring during the summer months.
