Nanaimo RCMP are investigating after a man in Nanaimo’s south end died from injuries sustained in an apparent assault.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, police were called by B.C. Ambulance Service after paramedics responded to an apartment in Harbour View Manor at 275 Nicol St. on Monday at 7 p.m. and were treating an adult male who had suffered injuries consistent with an assault.

The victim subsequently died of his injuries.

“Police are treating the death as suspicious,” Cpl. Jon Stuart, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said in the press release. “These incidents are complex and take time to ensure appropriate steps are taken.”

The press release went on to state there had been no arrest made as of Tuesday afternoon, that the incident appeared to be isolated and there was no apparent threat to the general public. The investigation is still in its early stages and it will take time to clarify what happened.

The Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit, which is conducting the investigation into the death, was at the scene at the apartment building Tuesday morning where the death occurred.

Police are not releasing the identity of the deceased at this time.
