Youth charged in Ladysmith school stabbing

RCMP in Ladysmith say a youth has been charged with assault with a weapon after a stabbing at the local high school. Officials at Ladysmith High School called police after a student was taken to hospital with a stab wound on Dec. 19.

The student told the RCMP he was walking along a crowded hallway during a break between classes when he felt a sharp pinch in his back, but when he turned, he did not see anyone he recognized. The student said his back started to hurt and the wound was discovered when a teacher looked at his back.

Mounties interviewed a suspect and the youth, who was released, is expected to return to court next month.

The two teenagers knew each other and police said the motives behind the stabbing are highly unusual though no one else at the school is at risk.
