It is with deep sadness that we announce Chuck’s passing on July 10th at the age of 73 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Vancouver on February 9, 1944 to Charles and Gwenneth Plester and is survived by his wife Sue and their sons Hayden and Cullen; his sons Matthew and Trevor; his honorary son Jerry Kusters; his sister Sandy and nephews Jason, Simon and Phillip; his mother-in-law Dorothy Adrain; his brother-in-law Steve Adrain (Larraine), niece Makenna and nephew Kaleb. After family, Chuck’s greatest passion was rugby, in which he achieved tremendous success, representing Canada, BC, UBC, Georgians and Meralomas, locally and around the world. Even as an over-40 Evergreen he could run like the wind and put on the moves. He also volunteered as a coach at Prince of Wales High School with the most consecutive BC Championship wins and for the BC Rugby Union presiding as its President in the 1990’s. Chuck’s career saw him as a well-respected member of the deep-sea shipping industry, allowing him to travel even more extensively and create close colleagues and friends all over the globe. Following his retirement, Chuck volunteered actively in the community, including as a founding member of KidSport Cowichan and a xture at Alex Aitken Elementary School where he ran the bottle drives, rescued balls from the roof, built concert sets, decorated gyms, cored pumpkins and removed wasps’ nests, to name but of few of his talents. Chuck was greatly admired as a devoted friend and if you could call him your friend you knew you were lucky. We are heartened that he is now in a pain-free place raising a glass of cheer to his opposite, surrounded by pals that have passed before him. As per Chuck’s wishes, we have planned a very special Celebration of Life, as follows: Saturday, September 16, 2017 4:00 pm onward, open house style, presentation at 6:30 pm, Duncan Community Lodge, 2244 Moose Road, Duncan, BC. This will be a time to remember his wonderful life with a photo montage, amazing memorabilia, lots of food and drinks and we encourage you to come ready to share your stories. If you like, please make a donation to your favourite charity in Chuck’s name, and hug those you love.
