Al passed away peacefully at the Cowichan District Hospital with family by his side. He is predeceased by parents Lillian and Ernest Barefoot, and siblings Roy, Pearl, Thelma and Laura.
He is survived by his children: Cindy (Rex), Russ (Pam) and Eric, and his grandsons: Sagan, Spencer, Cole and Connor. Also, first wife,Yvonne (mother of children) and second wife, Ellie, both so appreciated for their support, assistance, and friendship to Dad over the years.
Al was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, (or as he would say, "Winterpeg Many-toboggans.") He loved to joke and get a laugh from anyone he met. A CNR/VIA Rail carman by trade (a difficult, dangerous job in the extreme cold winters), he finally retired and followed his dream to live on Vancouver Island. Al was also a skilled carpenter, building unique homes and cottages for his family in Manitoba and BC. He enjoyed drawing and painting, but his specialty was wood carving. He created many cherished sculptures for friends and great toys for his kids. He loved being in nature and reminisced about happy times by the Seine River, and at his Wallace Lake cottage in Manitoba. He outlived and dearly missed his old best friend, Derry from Wpg. but found pleasure, and felt lucky to have his little house by the park in Duncan where he could walk and talk to strangers and try out his jokes... Al will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many who knew him.
Family would like to thank Volunteer Cowichan, Better at Home program. The two Lindas who had friendly phone chats with Al and sent nice cards were very appreciated! Also, a VERY HUGE THANK YOU to Sharon and Rob, the most generous neighbours ever!! He really enjoyed all your great cooking. Your caring kindness and watching out for him was so appreciated!! And finally, thanks to all the hard working medical and support staff at the hospital who made him comfortable in his short stay. You are truly amazing! What would we do without you??
