July 13, 1937 - March 13, 2020
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gurnam Singh Sandhu on March 13, 2020 at the age of 82. Predeceased by his beautiful, loving wife of 64 years, Joginder Kaur Sandhu, his daughter Kam and son-in-law, Paul.
Gurnam was born in Rurka Kalan, Jalandhar, Punjab, India on July 13, 1937. He immigrated to Canada in September of 1959 and made Lake Cowichan his home and after retirement he and his wife moved to Duncan. Gurnam worked at the Youbou Sawmill as a Grader until he retired, but continued to work at Chemainus Forest Products.
In his spare time, Gurnam could be found building homes around the Cowichan Valley. He enjoyed gardening (vegetables, fruits and flowers) and sharing the fruits of his labour with family, friends and neighbours; he was already planning this year's crop. If that was not enough, he would always find time to go for his long daily walks. As a member of the Sikh community, Gurnam often volunteered at the Sikh temples in the area. In his younger years, Gurnam enjoyed hunting with his friends and sons. He was also known for his immaculate moustache.
"Mr. Sandhu" (as his late wife would call him) will always be remembered for his work ethic, putting the needs of others before his and the love for family unity. Those who knew Gurnam know he was a hard worker and expected the same from others. It brought him great joy to see everyone's successes and accomplishments.
Gurnam will be dearly missed by his children, Sid, Jas (Kristine), Dal (Blair), Ron (Ronnie), Harry (Rhonda), Sharon (Dave), his 9 grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and good friends.
A small family service was held on March 17, 2020.
Thank you to the medical community for their care, compassion and kindness. A special thank you to Dr. Reimer for the exceptional care provided to Gurnam over the years.
