April 19, 1930 - October 12, 2023

James Roy Elvins passed away peacefully on October 12 at the age of 93. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dad was born in Nanaimo April 19, 1930, and spent his early years on his parents' farm in Cedar before moving to Duncan.

He joined the Air Force and worked in Ottawa where he met and married mom, Gloria Cappellani in 1956. They moved to Duncan in 1959 and raised five children.

He worked in his parents' butcher shop in Duncan before working for BC Tel, Swifts Meats, Duncan Taxi, Bruce's Grocery, Graham's Meats, and finally getting on at the Crofton Pulp and Paper Mill (BCFP back then) and worked there from 1967 - 1993.

Dad would volunteer his services wherever needed and coached his sons' soccer teams, was the treasurer at 744 Air Cadet Squadron for several years, helped maintain St. Mary's cemetery, and spent countless hours at St. Johns church in Duncan looking after the grounds, painting, and doing general maintenance when needed.

Dad enjoyed holidays in Mexico and cruises to Alaska with Mom but equally enjoyed working in his large garden and sharing its bounty, or helping his friends get firewood up in the bush. He was always quick to help all of us kids to work on our houses from pouring concrete to doing roofing.

Dad is the last of his generation. He was predeceased by his wife Gloria, parents; Thomas Shirley and Gertrude Marie; his siblings, Frank Elvins, Doreen Carter, and Joan Pope.

He is survived and terribly missed by his five children: Shirley (Mike) Vanderstap, Dale (Debbie) Elvins, Greg Elvins, Bruce (Jill) Elvins, Brenda (Doug) Lockhart; 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Many thanks to Dr. Tom Rimmer for looking after mom and dad over the years, Deb for looking after dad so he could live in his house longer, and the loving staff at Cerwydden Care home where the ladies will miss him.

Funeral service will be held at St. Johns church in Duncan at 11am, April 20th, 2024.
