December 9, 1929 – April 29, 2021
Joseph (Joe) Kelly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Sunridge Place, Duncan, BC on April 29, 2021 at the age of 91.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughters: Christina (Colin) Inkster, Evelyn Kelly, Brenda Kelly; son Michael Kelly; grandchildren: Aaron, Beth, and Glendon Inkster. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family. He was truly a remarkable man whose Irish eyes were always smiling.
Joe was born in Kilteel, County Kildare, Ireland and immigrated to Canada on July 16, 1953. After spending time in Halifax and Toronto, he and his wife Rita moved to BC and eventually to Duncan in 1973.
His wife Rita passed away in June of 1979. He later married Ellen (Mahan) Flostrand in 1980 and they were married for 35 years until she lost her battle with cancer in 2015. Ellen became a significant part of the Kelly family.
Those that knew and worked with Joe would describe him as a humble, kind, gentle and generous man, always ready to help family, friends and his church, without hesitation. He made a positive impression on a lot of people in his lifetime.
Joe worked as a millwright and retired from the Crofton Mill in 1995. After retirement, he volunteered his time by picking up food donations for the Food Bank, helping out during events at the St. Edwards Parish as well as countless hours helping friends and family with various projects.
Joe’s love of sports included watching the Vancouver Canucks, the BC Lions, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cowichan Valley Capitals. Woodworking was a favorite hobby of his and he created many family keepsakes.
He will be sadly missed by many friends who loved him dearly. We extend our deepest gratification for the kindness and support shown by many of them during recent years.
Also, a huge thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Sunridge Place that provided exceptional care for Joe during his stay.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at St. Edward’s Parish followed by a Graveside Committal at 3 pm at Mountain View Cemetery where Joe will be laid to rest with his predeceased wife Rita Ann Kelly.
