It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our Mum and Nana, after a fast and furious two month fight with cancer.

Marie Cecile Doucette (Boland) finally went to rest on October 3rd, 2016 at the Cowichan District Hospital at the age of 74. Nana is survived by her companion Bill Donaldson, daughter Judi, son Glenn, her four treasured grandchildren Ashley & fiance Sean Martin, Travis, Scott, Darren & fiance Ashley Myers, & the biggest diamonds in her eyes, Great-Grandgirlies, Elena & Jade. She was Mum, Nana, G-Nan and Nanu to most of us here in the Cowichan Valley.

Marie was born in Curling, Newfoundland on July 23, 1942 and married Larry October 5th 1961. They moved to Victoria in 1963, where Marie worked for Island Farms Dairy , then moved to Duncan in 1974. She worked at the old Mr. Mikes, the local newspaper, and managed the restaurant at Robinson’s for years. You couldn’t find a butter tart, apple pie, a bran muffin or bowl of cream of broccoli soup anywhere as good as Nana’s.

Marie was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and carried the flag for many years. She was a long time member of the Maritimer’s Club, the Elks Club and an avid bowler here in the Valley. She won awards for her crocheted table cloths, and enjoyed knitting, making wine, and travelling. She was a true blue Newfie, and everyone who knew her loved her for her unique sense of humour, her generosity, stubborness, and sometimes brutal honesty. Her greatest love was her family; she didn’t miss a game, a trophy, a school picnic or concert, and the very thought of not being able to grow up with Elena and Jade brought her to tears. She will forever be in our hearts and yes, she and Papa will still be with us all in spirit and in the stories and laughs we will carry and share.

A celebration of Mum’s life will be held at the Elk’s Club on Saturday October 15th at 1 pm. In lui of flowers donations to the Cancer or Parkinson’s Society would be greatly appreciated.
