In Loving Memory (1926-2024) ~

Mary Vivian Rambold passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Tuesday March 26. Mary was born in Duncan in 1926 and soon took up residence on the shores of Somenos lake where her father ran a small farm producing strawberries for the local market.

Although these were years of the Great Depression, she spoke very fondly of a happy childhood with her friends and neighbours along the lake. The subsequent war meant an absence of boys, keenly felt during her adolescence. However, this absence also meant she could enter the workforce at a young age, firstly at the telegraph office and then at the Cowichan Leader where she spent many happy years assisting with various aspects of the newspaper.

In 1949 she met and married William Rambold and, as was the custom of the time, retired from paid employment to raise a family. Together Bill and Mary raised three children Will (Bernadette), Patrick (Pauline) and Michele (Richard).

At last count her descendants have grown to now include seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her child rearing activities, Mary was active with the Boy Scouts and later the BP guild as well as the United Church, Toastmistresses, the Cowichan Museum and the Warmland Calligraphy group.

Her talent for drawing and calligraphy meant she always had graphic art projects and commissions on the go. Two major works undertaken on behalf of the City of Duncan included the commemoration of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth and a tourist map of the local area.

But if there is one thing that Mary will be most remembered for by all who knew her it will be her caring spirit. She touched the lives of many of her family and friends in a profound way - so that her legacy will live on in others long after her passing.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Cerwydden Seniors Community who made her last years so pleasant and, in conjunction with Dr Valorie Masuda, her final days peaceful and pain free.

There will be a memorial tea to be held at First Memorial Funeral Services on May 4th from 1-3pm. Please drop in if for a chat and a chance to remember Mary if you can. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC SPCA Cowichan: https://spca.bc.ca/locations/cowichan/
