Winifred Smith (nee Chatterley) passed away peacefully in Chemainus, BC on March 10, 2020. She was born over 100 years ago on December 13, 1919 in Norfolk, England to parents Charles Cecil and Annie Sophia Chatterley.
She graduated from the Southern College of Art in Portsmouth, England before serving in the WAAF during WW2. In 1947 she emigrated to Canada where she lived with her Canadian husband in Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Chemainus and Duncan, BC.
Art work, painting and ceramics, remained an important part of Winifred's life and she was a member of the Crofton, Cherry Point and Maple Bay art groups as well as the Canadian Federation of Artists. She loved animals (and owned many - from ponies to peacocks) and traveling throughout BC and England. She enjoyed poetry and published several books of poems.
Predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James Livingstone Smith, she is survived by daughters Gillian (Bill) Bystedt and Janis (Garry) Horley and grandchildren Jonathan, Matthew and Nicholas Bystedt and Jennifer, Scott and Evan Horley and great grandchild Eva.
She will be greatly missed.
