Backyard burning can ruin a perfect Cowichan day

In response to the editorial “Burning archaic”, (Citizen, April 5)

I would like to thank the Citizen for the editorial on outdoor burning. It is archaic and time for it to be banned completely.

We live in Shawnigan Lake, one of the areas the writer referred to as not having any burning regulations. Just as the article pointed out, recently on one of those beautiful days we were in our backyard and had the doors and windows open to let in the fresh air when our backyard filled with smoke and we were forced indoors and had to batten down the house as it too was full of smoke.

Only a ban will stop people from burning their backyard waste and very often these same people throw other garbage on top of their yard waste which becomes an even greater health hazard.

Regardless as to whether you have asthma or not, outdoor buring can ruin an otherwise perfect Cowichan day and it is time it was stopped.
