Thank you for your editorial decrying the cynical cancellation of the promise for electoral reform. I was disappointed that editorials in other papers seem to be letting Trudeau off the hook on it, swallowing the Liberal’s explanation that the public wasn’t interested.
If they are basing that opinion on the relatively low response rate to the survey the Liberals sent out, I think an alternative reason for that low response rate was the ridiculous nature of the questions asked. I think people felt that the survey was designed to trick them into giving the answers that the Liberals wanted, and opted not to play that game.
I also worry that many young people will feel so betrayed by this broken promise that they will give up on voting altogether. Strong democracy needs us all to be engaged in the issues of the day, and to feel that our votes can make a change for the better. We need to let the Liberal MPs know that electoral reform is important to us. Sign the petition at Fair Vote Canada to have this issue debated in the House of Commons.
