Scammers are out in force

Why are some folk set on making life miserable for others? The magical joy of Christmas is hardly over, and already they try to trick you. I’ve been contacted seven times within four days by telephone solicitors; the ones that aren’t registered and legitimate. I’m talking about those that try to catch you with their sweet talk or with their threats, and those trying to convince you that they are a younger family member in trouble. Yes, the scammers!

It’s not mid January of a brand new year and five times [fake] border control officers left a recorded message, claiming to have a parcel with a suspicious content for me. The officer instructed me to phone a certain number ASAP as a warrant for my arrest was already issued!

Well, since I didn’t expect a parcel from outside the country, I would like to suggest that he keeps the parcel. Aren’t suspected parcels confiscated and destroyed at the border? So why warn me of a warrant for my arrest if I do not accept nor receive the suspected parcel?

This week I received an email from an acquaintance of mine.

After a very friendly intro he asked for my help with an issue that he’ll explain via another email address. Could I please contact him at that address. The email was then signed with my acquaintance’s full name, which he never uses!

I’m just wondering what the New Year’s resolution of these people looks like? Would they resolve to frustrate an ‘x’ amount of people, or to scam an even greater amount of people out of their hard earned money? Sad really, to make a job of scamming people.

It behooves especially the elderly and those living by themselves to be vigilant, to be a bit more skeptical, and to carefully scrutinize calls or emails from people you don’t know. Not only do we need to fend off a pandemic, we need to fend off these pests too.

May you have a safe and healthy New Year!
