Time for big, bold Just Transition plan

I’ve been absolutely devastated by the coverage of the massive oil pipeline spill that’s devastating the ocean and coastal ecosystems off the coast of California.

On Sept. 2 at least 126,000 gallons spilled into Pacific waters, creating a 13-square-mile slick that’s already killed thousands of fish and birds and caused immense, irreparable damage.

These types of disasters are a central feature of the fossil fuel economy, and are becoming more prevalent as we take more extreme measures to dig, drill, frack and transport toxic fossil fuels.

The solutions to the climate crisis are all around us, yet it’s political will and the influence of the fossil fuel industry that’s keeping us trapped in this destructive energy system.

If we want to transition off fossil fuels, our federal government needs to create a big and bold Just Transition plan that listens to science, puts people — not corporations — first, and that creates good, unionized jobs for anyone who wants one, building the energy system of the future.

The fossil fuel industry has had too high of a toll on our planet. For Justin Trudeau and his government, the time is now to deliver the big and bold Just Transition legislation we need.

Signed,

Chris Kallis
