Cowichan’s senior men’s soccer teams will get the season underway this weekend with a pair of games in the McGavin Cup tournament.

The McGavin Cup is open to all Vancouver Island Soccer League teams, with the exception of the top four Div. 1 squads.

Two Cowichan teams will have quarterfinal matches in a doubleheader at the Sherman Road turf this Sunday.

The Div. 3 squad, Cowichan Oak FC will take the field against Div. 4 Cook Street United at 2 p.m., and the Div. 1 entry, Cowichan Axis FC, will square off against Div. 2 Saltspring United at 5 p.m.

Axis (then known as Cowichan LMG) finished sixth in Div. 1 last season, while Saltspring United earned promotion to Div. 2 by finishing first in Div. 3 pool B. Cowichan Oak FC placed fourth in Div. 3 pool B, and Cook Street United finished fourth in Div. 4.

The Cowichan Valley Soccer Association will have five teams in the VISL this year: Div. 1 Cowichan Axis FC, Div. 3 Cowichan Oak FC, the Div. 4 Cowichan Farmstore Fury, and the Cowichan 49ers and Cowichan Steelheads, both in the masters A division.
