The atom B Cowichan Valley Capitals came home from their first tournament of the season with a gold medal.

The Capitals competed at the Saanich Remembrance Day Tournament at the Pearkes Recreation Centre in Victoria, compiling a record of four wins and one loss, including a shootout victory in the championship game.

After knocking off the Victoria Racquet Club B2 team 6-3 in the semifinal, Cowichan advanced to the gold-medal game against the Powell River Kings.

The Capitals were ahead 5-4 when Powell River scored with three minutes left in the third period to force a shootout. Donovan McCarter and Tristan Warwick scored on their attempts in the first round of three shooters, but Powell River matched their two goals. In the final round of one shooter for each team, Cowichan goalie Carter Puska stopped the Powell River shooter, while Damien Sutton made good on his opportunity to give the Capitals the win.

Led by head coach Jason Jubenville and assistants Drayson Akhurst and Chris Wilkinson, the atom B Capitals are sponsored by Warwick Forest Services, Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith, and Berk’s Intertruck.
