Ten athletes and three coaches from the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club are headed to Alberta this weekend for the 2022 Canadian Wrestling Championships.
B.C. high school champion Phoenix Skailes and bronze-medallists Carter Zuback and Darren Doherty headline the Cowichan team that will compete for medals in the event hosted by the Tsuu’tina Nation outside Calgary.
Rounding out the contingent are Antonio Iannidinardo, Emma Greenwood, Aidan Dyer-Price, Loryn Roberts, Ross Meiner, Georgia Bond and Sedona Bond.
“We haven’t been to nationals in two years,” noted CVWC head coach Nick Zuback, who will be joined on the trip by fellow coaches Ryan Yewchin and Karen Ward. “Our goal is to bring some hardware back to Cowichan.”
Although the high school provincial championships combine wrestlers in grades 8-12, the national championships has three different age groups, in addition to multiple weight classes, providing more opportunities for wrestlers to finish on the podium.
“It would be nice to see us with a handful of medals coming back to Cowichan,” Zuback said.
