The Cowichan Rugby Football Club’s U16 girls team will play for provincial bronze on their home turf this Sunday.
Cowichan lost the Island final at Piggie Park last Sunday against a combined James Bay and Westshore team that they had lost to in a league game just a week earlier. Many clubs combine forces to field U16 girls teams, but Cowichan has enough players to do it alone, not only having a team, but contending as well.
“Cowichan is one of the few standalone U16 girls teams,” coach Sherry Spence pointed out. “So for us it was exciting that we didn’t have to combine with the other North Island teams.”
Cowichan’s U16s will play for bronze against a combined United/Ridge Meadows side at 12:30 p.m., while the gold medal match between James Bay/Westshore and Abbotsford takes place on the adjacent pitch.
That will be followed at 1:45 p.m. by the U19 provincial championship match between Castaway Wanderers and Abbotsford. Castaways won the Island U19 title over a North Island team that included eight Cowichan players.
“At the older level unfortunately we don’t have a full team,” Spence noted. “But looking forward with the growth of junior female rugby, we’re excited and hopeful we will be able to field full sides in all age grades.”
