Mid-Island Brewers sweep doubleheader against Pirates

7-strikeout inning among the highlights

The Mid-Island Brewers picked up a pair of one-run wins in the South Island Baseball League last Saturday, beating the Lambrick Pirates 8-7 and 12-11.

With several players missing to attend the celebration of life for Dennis Poets, the Brewers had to use three different call-up players, and it was an eye-opening experience for some of them.

In the first game against the Pirates, the Brewers’ pitcher struck out seven batters (you read that right) as his velocity proved a challenge for the call-up catcher to contain, resulting in a few dropped balls. The Pirates scored all seven of their runs in that inning, all unearned.

Brewers manager Keygan Hankins felt for the catcher.

“As fun and crazy as seven strikeouts in one inning is, I don’t want the poor guy we picked up beating himself up over it,” he said.

The Brewers are at home this Saturday against the Layritz Reds, the only other undefeated team in the league and the team the Brewers defeated to win the SIBL championship last year. Games are set for noon and 3 p.m. at Evans Park.
