The South Island Volleyball Club invited teams from other clubs across Vancouver Island to Mill Bay on Feb. 25 for a playday at Frances Kelsey Secondary School.
Teams from Campbell River, Comox, Powell River, Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Victoria joined four teams from the SCVC for the day-long event.
“The enthusiasm, spirit and energy is high among the teams and we are excited to host this full-day volleyball tournament for girls,” SCVC parent manager Linda Parsons said.
The Feb. 25 event was the first of two playdays the SCVC is hosting this season for players in the U17/18 and U15/16 age groups. The second one is scheduled for April 1.
The club founded in late 2015 by a group of volleyball coaches and players, is led by Dannie Richards, a Kelsey grad who played on five straight national championship teams at the University of British Columbia and represented Canada internationally.
“The girls’ volleyball skills have improved greatly and the girls look forward to success in upcoming Super Series Tournaments hosted by Volleyball BC in March and April, all leading to provincial playdowns in May,” Richards said.
In addition to their on-court activities, the SCVC is doing fundraising, with a bottle drive planned for April 2 at the Kerry Park Recreation Centre, and a Beer and Burger Night with a silent auction at the Cobblestone Pub, also on April 2.
