Shawnigan Lake student-athlete spearheads fundraising hockey game

Game will be played in support of Hockey Fights Cancer

It will be a first for Canadian Sport School Hockey League when the Shawnigan Lake School U17 prep boys face off against Idaho’s Coeur D’Alene Hockey Academy in an outdoor game Jan. 6 at Sun Peaks.

But it’s much more than just an outdoor hockey game. Initiated by Grade 10 student Carson Usher, whose father has glioblastoma, the game will be played in support of Hockey Fights Cancer and the Canadian Cancer Society and American Cancer Society.

“My Dad is really courageous and upbeat even though the odds are stacked against him,” Usher explained. “Anyone who has ever met my dad knows that he is happiest when he’s helping others. He has been an important role model to me and to many of my teammates over the years as a fun and caring hockey coach and manager in Langley and at Burnaby Winter Club. I look to follow his lead and help make a difference to many families dealing with cancer.”

Usher is doing just that. So far, the fundraiser has earned more than $14,000, blasting past his $2,500 goal.

The puck drops at 1:30 p.m. at Sun Peaks Skating Rink.
