Shawnigan sweeps indoor hockey tourney

Shawnigan Lake School finished atop a strong field at the 2015 BC Indoor Field Hockey Championships at Chemainus Secondary School last weekend.

The defending provincial AAA high school champions, Shawnigan went undefeated at the six-team tournament to place first.

The school earned wins over the Calgary Cougars (7-1), the Tsunami (9-1), the Island Wildcats (5-3), Brentwood College School (9-1) and the Typhoon (4-2).

Second place in the tournament went to the Island Wildcats, who boasted half a dozen Cowichan Valley players in their lineup. The Wildcats finished with three wins, one loss and one tie, just ahead of the third-place Typhoon, who finished the tournament with three wins and two losses.

Rounding out the group were Brentwood at 2-3, Calgary at 1-3-1 and the Tsunami at 0-5. The Typhoon are Cowichan Field Hockey's top squad, while the Tsunami are a development team.

Shawnigan's Paula Justus ran away with the scoring title, compiling 13 goals over her team's five matches. Typhoon teammates Emma Dame and Sophia Murray were next with nine and eight goals, respectively, while Carla Ehlers of Brentwood finished with seven. Shawnigan's Mara Lorenz-Meyer and the Typhoon's Maddie Smith tied Calgary's Jamie Emery with six apiece.

The Senior Indoor Field Hockey Championships will take place this weekend at the Island Savings Centre.
