The Musqueam Spurs and Cormorants won the women’s and men’s divisions at the 51st Annual Cowichan Buckskin Soccer Tournament held at the Si’em Lelum and Sherman Road fields this past weekend.
Musqueam beat the Saanich Hurricanes 2-0 for the women’s title, while the Alert Bay 96ers won the consolation bracket. All-stars on the women’s side included Danielle Barnes (Alert Bay), Danya Harris (Alert Bay), Edna Jack (Shell Beach), Kevanna Thorne (Shell Beach), Taylor James (Hurricanes), Angelica Thomas (Hurricanes), Susie Thomas (Hurricanes), Tahlala Marks (Musqueam), Jamie Holmes (Musqueam), Jade Campbell (Musqueam) and Viena Timothy (Musqueam). Timothy was also named tournament MVP and best offensive player, while Holmes was named best defensive player.
The Cormorants beat the Kuper Island Thunder 2-1 in golden goal overtime for top spot in the men’s tournament, while the Cowichan Eagles won the consolation title.
Alex Escobar was named an all-star for the Eagles. Other all-stars included William Johnson (Cormorants), Kyle August (Cormorants), Dustin Price (Cormorants), Darian Harris (Cormorants), Brent Brown (Thunder), Shane Brown (Thunder), Ray Sam (Thunder), Kaden Jack (Thunder), Quinn Dreaver (Sliammon) and Gordie Elliott (Saanich United). Harris was named MVP, Price was picked as top goalie, and August was named the best offensive player.
The tournament, organized by Bill Thorne with support from the Cowichan community, once again attracted strong competition from across Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.
