Seven athletes and two coaches from the Cowichan Valley were named among the 1,768 participants for the 2018 BC Winter Games in Kamloops next month.

The athletes and coaches will represent Zone 6 (Vancouver Island/Central Coast) in six different sports during the games on Feb. 22-25.

The list of athletes includes Crofton’s Nicholas Blundell in wheelchair basketball, Mill Bay’s Zack Drought in curling, Shawnigan Lake’s Tahara Brown and Crofton’s Brooklyn Stobbe in gymnastics, Cowichan Bay’s Alexander Michaluk and Cobble Hill’s Marcus Potts in judo, and Shawnigan Lake’s Victor Good in karate.

Drought, who curls out of Kerry Park, skipped his team — rounded out by Juan de Fuca’s Sampson McNeil, Cohen Dawson and Anthony Budden — to a berth in the BC Games through a qualifying event at Lake Cowichan.

Roger Walker of the Cowichan Bowmen will coach the Zone 6 archery team, while Anna Mataganova, who coaches Brown and Stobbe with the Duncan Dynamics, will lead the Island gymnastic contingent.

The Cowichan Valley will host the BC Summer Games on July 19-22.
