In their first shutout of the season, the Cowichan Valley Bulldogs beat Nanaimo LB 26-0 over the May long weekend, amassing 217 total yards to just 79 for Nanaimo.
“When the defence plays that well it makes it really easy on the offence,” said head coach Kyle Bellis. “I think everyone on the defence played amazing.”
Defensive standouts included “Dub” Singh, Christian Murray, Carter Thorne, and Liam Freeland.
On offence, Deven Randhawa led the way with a 58-yard run and a five-yard catch — both for touchdowns. Finnley Bellis scored on a five-yard run and had two successful point-after attempts while Brett Fifield also played well for the team.
The Atom Bulldogs play next on the road this coming May 25 against Southside in Nanaimo.
“I continue to be impressed with the growth this team is making and I am optimistic that the boys have playoffs in their future,” Bellis said.
Peewee
The peewee Bulldogs played a rare mid-week game against the Ladysmith Steelers on May 15, winning 64-0.
“It was an amazing game getting to see tons of players step up and play out of their usual positions,” said head coach Trystan Ryder. “We had two defensive touchdowns: one from Justin Jack Thomas on a one-handed interception for a touchdown, and the other was a punt return by Maddex Trotter for a touchdown.”
Offensively, the team had a lot of different players score. Carter Bouchard had two touchdowns on the day, Rylen Heyer had a rushing touchdown to go with several passing touchdowns. Charlie Freeman scored on the ground, Will Turpel scored his first touchdown this year, and Harrison Plaxton scored as well.
The peewee Bulldogs play next on the road this coming May 25 against Southside.
Junior Bantam
The JB Bulldogs took a hit, losing to the league-leading Saanich Wolverines 32-0 on May 18.
“Although the score seems one sided, our team played a great game. We held a very talented Saanich team to just eight points at halftime,” said head coach Trystan Ryder. “Our offensive line was on top of their game. Rookie guard Kohen Glutek had his best game of football to date. Week in and week out this player continues to improve his play, at one of the hardest positions to play in the game.”
Along with Glutek, tackle Drake Thomas also stepped his game up in a big way, said the coach.
“Our entire O-line worked very hard to slow the rush from the Saanich D-line, and give our quarterback time to get the job done. Atlas Woodard, made some nice runs out of the backfield, as well as catching some perfectly placed passes by our QB Domenic Reeves.”
Defensive end Ty Bartilucci played very well on the D-line. With “a great mix of speed and strength”, he gave the Saanich ball carriers trouble all day, Ryder noted.
“It was not the final score we had hoped for, but there were definitely positives to take away from this game. It’s been a tough season, but the entire coaching staff is very proud of the way this team has carried themselves, and shown up to work hard every game.”
The JB Bulldogs meet Saanich once again this coming May 25 at home at 11 a.m. at McAdam Park.
