The Cowichan Valley Football Association went three-for-three this past weekend on their own home turf, with each team scoring convincing victories over their opponents from Victoria.
Atom
The atom Bulldogs scored early and often in their 44-6 victory over the Victoria Spartans on May 4 at McAdam Park.
Deven Randhawa’s 64-yard first quarter touchdown run set the tone and Tayte Clarke followed it up with a 19-yard run of his own, before catching a pass from Finn Bellis for the two-point conversion to put the Bulldogs ahead 15-0 before Victoria even blinked.
The second quarter was more of the same as Randhawa caught a 14-yard pass from Bellis and then Bellis pushed past the goal line as well for a 29-0 lead at the half.
The defence’s only stumble came in the third quarter but not before Randhawa secured a 36-0 lead on a 16-yard catch from Bellis.
Victoria managed to get a touchdown but the point after attempt was no good. At the end of three quarters it was Cowichan 36, Victoria, 6.
The fourth quarter saw Bellis run 70 yards to paydirt and then Austin Shaver caught a two-point conversion for the Bulldogs’ final score of the game.
Brett Fifield also took two runs for 58 yards to bolster Cowichan’s offence on the day.
The team’s defence was tight, with Liam Freeland and Christian Murray both leading the way with five tackles and multiple assists with Carter Thorne, Aiden Carey, Dub Singh, Noah Atchison and Mylan Parry all contributing to what ended up as -36 total yards for the Spartans.
The Atoms visit Saanich on May 11 at 10 a.m.
Peewee
Another exiting game followed the atoms as the peewees played to a 48-24 victory on home turf.
“The Spartans came out swinging but our receivers were just playing electric football,” said head coach Justin Young. Harrison Plaxton toted the rock once for a touchdown and caught two long scampering passes for another two for three on the day. Charlie Freeman scored from the other slot twice as well. Then to round it out, backup running back Felix Bernardi scored a five-yard touchdown.
Meanwhile the Bulldogs’ defence held strong, only getting bested by some clever trickery in the form of a screen pass.
The defence was led by defensive ends Reef Parry and Vaughn Williams. Cowichan’s tackle leader of the day was Rylend Monti at outside linebacker.
“I’m proud of us winning all our home games,” Young noted. “The real test will be this weekend against the Saanich Wolverines who are undefeated.”
The peewees visit Saanich on May 11 at 11:30 a.m.
Junior Bantam
“Our team played excellent football on both sides of the ball,” said head coach Trystan Ryder of the junior bantam Bulldogs’ 54-0 win over the Victoria Spartans at McAdam Park on May 4. “Our offensive line played outstanding. This group has made a commitment to improving week to week, and it shows.”
Running back and special teams standout Mica Kendrick scored, running the ball from scrimmage as well as returning an onside kick. Another special teams highlight was the kicking of Tristan Lamb. He went seven for eight on extra point converts, and showed incredible accuracy in the placekicking game.
“Our defence was relentless, and didn’t allow the Spartans to do much of anything,” Ryder added. “Landen Laver, Eli Atchison and Wesley Happell led our defence with thunderous tackles, and timely turnovers.”
The JB’s visit Nanaimo on May 11 at 4:30 p.m.
