Cowichan Valley Wrestlers excel at high school provincials

Cowichan Valley Wrestlers showcased exceptional talent and determination at the BC High School Wrestling Championships in Vancouver Feb. 22-24.

More than 30 Cowichan Valley wrestlers had qualified to compete at the big event, which saw participation from more than 650 athletes representing 136 different schools across the province.

Following two days of fierce competition, 14 Cowichan wrestlers proudly claimed medal honors.

Rei Nagatomi (Frances Kelsey) secured first place in the girls’ 75kg class, clinching her second consecutive B.C. title without conceding a single point — an extraordinary feat lauded by coach Ryan Yewchin.

In a thrilling final showdown, Brayden Zuback (QMS) rallied from behind to seize gold in the boys’ 38kg class, a moment celebrated by coach Nick Zuback for Brayden’s unwavering dedication.

Emma Greenwood (QMS), Loryn Roberts (QMS), Grace Meiner (QMS), Jack Pye (Royal Bay), and Grant Coulthart (Alberni) delivered impressive second place finishes in their respective weight classes, displaying remarkable skill and determination.

“Despite facing challenges, including illness, wrestlers like Captain Jack and Grant showcased admirable resilience throughout their matches,” Zuback said.

Ben Cote (NCS), Carter Zuback (QMS), and Antonio Iannidinardo (Frances Kelsey) demonstrated exceptional prowess, securing third and fourth place finishes in their respected weight classes. Contributing to the Valley’s stellar performance were wrestlers Ross Meiner (Cowichan), Gabe Carreiro (Frances Kelsey), Lyla Boylan (Frances Kelsey), Savanna Screaton (QMS), and Rose Wu (QMS), who claimed spots in the top six.

In team standings, QMS placed fourth overall, fourth in the girls’ division, and third in the combined boys’ and girls’ division.

“It is an impressive feat for a program that is only in its third year,” Zuback noted.

Frances Kelsey earned ninth overall and sixth place in the girls’ division.

Following the eighth annual Cowichan Valley Elementary Wrestling Playdown on Feb. 29 at QMS, the region’s wrestlers will compete at the inaugural Western Canada Wrestling Club Championships hosted by CVWC and QMS on March 9-10.
