Cowichan Secondary girls, DCS boys second at welcome back tournaments

The Cowichan Secondary senior girls basketball team placed second in the annual Welcome Back tournament hosted by Duncan Christian School earlier this month.

Cow High defeated the host DCS 69-55 to open their tournament, before ousting Shawnigan Lake School 67-55 to send them to the final against Maple Ridge.

Maple Ridge beat Cow High 51-23 in the final. Cow High’s tournament all-star was Carla Higuera and players of the game were Higuera, Amelie Brach, and Raffie Barrack.

Shawnigan Lake School got by Ladysmith 66-49 to place third and fourth respectively.

Shawnigan Lake’s all star was Kate Rowsthorn and players of the game were Rowsthorn, Cassidy Ngan, and Selam Cooper.

After falling to Cow High, DCS beat Glenlyon Norfolk School 49-14 and Ucluelet 45-44 to place fifth overall.

Clare Scholefield scored 39 points over DCS’s three games while Sydney Dollman netted 25.

DCS’s tournament all-stars were Dollman and Violette Muller and the DCS players of the game were Dollman, Muller, Merika Henry, and Scholefield.

Ucluelet went on to prevail over Glenlyon Norfolk School 23-8 to round out the field to place seventh and eighth respectively.

While the DCS girls were hosting the senior girls event, the senior boys hit the road to compete at the North Island Kick off tournament at Campbell River Christian School.

The DCS boys began the event with a hard-fought win over Brooks of Powell River and then followed that up with a convincing win over Port Hardy to advance to the tournament final against the host school.

An inspiring effort saw the Chargers come back from a halftime deficit of 20 points to force overtime against Campbell River Christian. Ultimately, the boys ended up losing the final by one basket. Grayson Dunn was selected as the player of the game in the final.
